Schwerin / Torgelow (dpa / mv) - Hardly any rain, dry wind and old dry leaves: the risk of forest fires is increasing in the south of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

As a spokesman for the Schwerin Ministry of Agriculture said on Monday, there is already warning level three in the Jasnitz, Sandhof and Mirow forestry offices, which describes a "medium risk".

In the east of the Vorpommern-Greifswald district, i.e. on the island of Usedom and around Torgelow to Penkun, danger level four applies.

There is a high risk of forest fires there.

There are a total of five warning levels.

"Cold does not protect against drought," said the spokesman with a view to low temperatures in the morning.

The temperature on the Müritz was zero on Monday morning.

In April, the risk of fire rises regularly, especially in the coniferous forests in southern Mecklenburg and Western Pomerania.

According to experts, this is also due to the fact that beeches and other deciduous trees do not yet have leaves.

That is why the sun and wind continue to dry out the forest floor.

There is also still a lot of fresh green missing on the ground.

A year ago, when it rained less in April, the risk of fire was higher.
