China News Service, Beijing, April 26 (Li Jingze) The International Atomic Energy Agency is currently advancing the establishment of a technical working group on Japan’s plan to discharge sewage from the Fukushima nuclear accident to the sea. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said at a regular press conference on the 26th. Said that the agency has confirmed to China a few days ago that it will invite Chinese experts to join the working group.

A reporter asked a question. The International Atomic Energy Agency is advancing the establishment of a technical working group on Japan's plan to discharge the sewage from the Fukushima nuclear accident to the sea. The international community is paying close attention to the relevant progress.

According to reports, South Korea has stated that the agency confirms its participation in the working group. Does China request to join the working group?

Have you negotiated with the International Atomic Energy Agency on this?

Wang Wenbin said that the Fukushima nuclear accident in Japan is one of the most serious nuclear accidents in the world. The Japanese government has ignored the doubts and oppositions at home and abroad, has not exhausted safe disposal methods, has not fully disclosed relevant information, and has not fully communicated with neighboring countries and the international community. Under the circumstances of consultation, the unilateral decision to dispose of the nuclear contaminated water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant accident by means of drainage is extremely irresponsible. It not only directly endangers the vital interests of the people of Japan’s neighboring countries, but also threatens the global marine environment and international public health and safety.

"As an important stakeholder, China has serious concerns about Japan's irresponsible practices. This is natural."

Wang Wenbin said that China advocates that the International Atomic Energy Agency set up a technical working group including China and other stakeholders as soon as possible to carry out work on the Fukushima nuclear-contaminated water disposal plan, follow-up implementation, and international evaluation and supervision.

Wang Wenbin pointed out that China maintains close communication and coordination with the International Atomic Energy Agency in this regard.

The agency is actively preparing for the establishment of a related technical working group, and has confirmed to the Chinese side that it will invite Chinese experts to join the working group.

China will fully support the organization's follow-up work.

"Before the Japanese side initiates the discharge of nuclear contaminated water, it should effectively meet the concerns of China and other stakeholders and the international community." Wang Wenbin emphasized.
