Munich (dpa) - In Germany, corporate sentiment improved only slightly in April.

The Ifo business climate index rose compared to the previous month by 0.2 points to 96.8 points, reports the Ifo Institute in Munich.

Analysts had expected a stronger increase to an average of 97.8 points.

Nevertheless, it is the third consecutive rise in the indicator, which is normally interpreted by economists as an economic turning point.

In detail, however, the results are mixed: While the companies rated their current business situation better, the prospects for the coming six months clouded over.

The business climate improved in industry and trade, but fell among service providers and in construction.

"The third wave of infections and bottlenecks in preliminary products are dampening the recovery of the German economy," said Ifo President Clemens Fuest, commenting on the results.
