Penzberg / Berlin (dpa / lby) - On the occasion of the commemoration of the Penzberg murder night, Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier has called for further dealing with the crimes of National Socialism.

This discussion is "difficult, but it is important," said Steinmeier on Monday at a digital discussion event with students from Penzberg.

It is important "that we do not follow the arguments of those who would like to draw a line".

On the night of April 28-29, 1945, some fanatical Hitler supporters killed 16 people in the small town in Upper Bavaria.

Previously, a group around the former mayor Hans Rummer had tried to achieve a peaceful handover of Penzberg to the American troops.

"Penzberg stands for numerous other places where something similar happened in these times, in the last days of the war," said Steinmeier.

Many Germans have not yet known anything about these crimes.

"They were murdered right up to the last minute - in the middle of Germany, everywhere in Germany."

In addition to Steinmeier and his wife Elke Büdenbender, author Kirsten Boie also took part in the discussion. She read from her youth book «Dunkelnacht».

It depicts the Penzberg murder night from the perspective of three fictional youths.
