Los Angeles (AP) - The Chinese director Chloé Zhao won the Oscar for best director with her film “Nomadland”.

This was announced by the US Film Academy on Monday night in Hollywood.

Zhao is the first non-white to be honored in this category.

She is also only the second woman to triumph in this category: So far, Kathryn Bigelow was the only Oscar-winning director with "Tödliches Kommando - The Hurt Locker" (2010).

“Nomadland” tells of a woman who, due to economic hardship, loads her belongings into a car and travels through the USA as a nomad.

The Oscar for Best Supporting Actor went to Daniel Kaluuya.

The 32-year-old black Brit was recognized for his performance in "Judas and the Black Messiah".

He plays the civil rights activist and activist Fred Hampton in the film about the Black Panther Party in the 1960s.

For Kaluuya, known from the British television series “Skins - Hautnah”, it is the first Oscar win.

In 2018 he was nominated for an Academy Award for his role in the horror film "Get Out".

The Danish film “Der Rausch” won the Foreign Oscar.

This did not fulfill German hopes;

This year three German co-productions were nominated in the category of best international feature film.

In the social satire "Der Rausch" by Danish director Thomas Vinterberg, Mads Mikkelsen plays one of four teachers who start a drinking experiment.

They drink alcohol regularly to help them cope with their lives;

but soon they lose control.

The first prizes of the evening were for the script categories.

British actress Emerald Fennell won the original script category for the revenge thriller “Promising Young Woman”.

The award for the best adapted screenplay went to Christopher Hampton and Florian Zeller for the family drama "The Father".

Because of the corona pandemic, the 93rd Academy Awards ceremony went differently than usual.

The frame was much smaller and more intimate.

The historic Union Station building in Los Angeles, for example, served as the main venue for the Oscar show and not the large Dolby Theater.

Nevertheless, numerous stars in glittering robes walked the red carpet, which was also much smaller this time.

And because of the travel difficulties caused by the Corona requirements, some Oscar candidates and laudators from international locations were also switched on via video.
