Wandlitz (dpa / bb) - The 100th birthday of the French chansonnier Georges Brassens (1921-1981) wants to celebrate the chanson festival named after him in the Wandlitz district of Basdorf with three major music events this year.

Because of the corona pandemic, the musicians for the overture in May only appear in the live stream, as the Brassens association in Basdorf announced.

According to the association's announcement, the musicians from France, Germany and various other countries - most of them old Basdorf friends - can be heard and seen in the live stream on May 14, 15 and 16 at 8 p.m.

A “Brassens Music Festival” is planned for June 17th to 20th.

Then the organizers hope to be able to organize open-air concerts in Basdorf again.

From October 21 to 24, further concerts in the Brandenburg town of Basdorf and the surrounding area are on the program under the title “100 Years of Brassens”.

Brassens was born on October 22, 1921 in Sète on the Mediterranean Sea and died on October 29, 1981 not far from Montpellier.

The festival reminds us that as a young man during the Second World War, between 1943 and 1944, Brassens lived as a slave laborer in Basdorf and worked in an aircraft engine factory.

It was then that he wrote his first songs.

The festival has been held every year since 2004.

It has already achieved a certain level of awareness in France.

The invited artists - most of them professional musicians - sing songs by Brassens at the festival in the original language of French or in their respective national languages.

In addition, they often present works by other French chansonniers or their own compositions.

Most of them live in Basdorf for the entire duration of the festival.
