Munich (AP) - Despite the commitment of the host cities around Munich for European Championship games in front of spectators, games without fans are still conceivable, according to UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin.

"The local authorities decide before the games whether spectators are allowed or not," said the head of the European Football Union (UEFA) of "Welt am Sonntag".

Ceferin denied that UEFA had asked the host cities to guarantee games with fans.

“What we want is the promise that spectators can come if the situation allows,” explained the 53-year-old Slovenian.

UEFA only confirmed Munich as co-host of this summer's tournament on Friday.

The continental federation had given the okay for the games and justified this in a notification by stating that “the responsible authorities had approved all four UEFA EURO 2020 matches in Munich with at least 14,500 spectators”.

However, immediately afterwards, a number of politicians in the federal, state and city sectors underlined that there was no fixed commitment for viewers due to the Corona imponderables.

There will only be spectators in the EM stadiums if the situation in the corona pandemic allows, said Ceferin. "You do not believe that we insist on spectators if the situation on site does not allow it in summer," he said. However, tests, hygiene concepts and vaccinations made him optimistic. He hoped the tournament would be “the comeback of football as we know it, and hopefully also the comeback of normal life,” said the UEFA President.

The DFB head of organization for the Munich games, Philipp Lahm, is also hoping for this.

«Everyone would like to see spectators in the stadium again.

I believe that that would give us a kind of normality and that it will also be an important step for other areas such as gastronomy and culture, ”said Lahm in the ZDF“ sports studio ”.

There is no deadline when a decision is to be made about the admission of spectators to the European Championship games in Munich: "That also depends on the rules that apply shortly before the tournament."
