Liège (dpa) - Professional cyclist Maximilian Schachmann finished ninth in Tadej Pogacar's victory at the 107th spring classic Liège-Bastogne-Liège.

The 27-year-old Berliner reached the finish line nine seconds behind Pogacar after 259.1 kilometers and eleven poisonous climbs.

The Slovenian Tour de France winner prevailed in a sprint of a five-man leading group ahead of the French world champion Julian Alaphilippe and his compatriot David Gaudu.

The series of spring classics came to an end with the oldest one-day race in the world.

There were no German successes.

Schachmann's third place at the Amstel Gold Race a week ago was still the best result.
