Munich (dpa) - According to Bayern boss Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, the Super League has definitely failed despite some clubs sticking to the project.

"The issue is finally settled," said the chairman of the German football championship of the "Bild am Sonntag".

"That was a warning shot," added Rummenigge.

In the end, it was “maybe even good” that the fuss over the new league had drastically upset the world within a few days.

This is how business people in football understood, “that football ticks a little differently than just business,” said Rummenigge.

Of the twelve founding clubs of the Super League, Real Madrid, Juventus Turin, FC Barcelona and AC Milan had not yet announced any intentions to withdraw from the project.

Rummenigge defended the resolved reform of the Champions League, which was recently criticized by Liverpool coach Jürgen Klopp and national player Ilkay Gündogan.

He said "full of conviction" that the reform will make the premier class better.

"The new form of the preliminary round makes the whole competition much more exciting and emotional, also because it is much more difficult for the big players to assert themselves," said Rummenigge.

After the reform, 36 instead of 32 teams will play in the Champions League from 2024, and each team will play ten instead of six group games.
