Essen / Kiel (dpa / lno) - The handball players of the THW Kiel prevented a slip in the fight for the German championship with the job victory at TuSEM Essen.

The defending champion prevailed on Sunday with 31:27 (16:15) against the relegation-threatened Essenes.

The best throwers were Sander Sagosen with seven goals for THW and ex-Kieler Lucas Firnhaber, who also scored seven goals for TuSEM.

In goalkeeper Dario Quenstedt, the outside Sven Ehrig and Rune Dahmke and the backcourt player Oskar Sunnefeldt, coach Filip Jicha had promoted several players from the second row into the first line-up.

The Czech tries to distribute the burden in the title fight.

At first, this only worked to a limited extent.

The Essenes kept up well.

First Eloy Morante Maldonado scored 11:11 (20th) after a three-goal deficit, then Dimitri Ignatow brought TuSEM 12:11 (21st) into the lead.

Jicha reacted, took a break.

Nevertheless, the "zebras" only went into the break by a narrow margin.

Essen, who had already shown a strong performance in the 28:29 home defeat against SG Flensburg-Handewitt, remained vicious even after the break and stayed in contact until 25:26 (51st).

It was only in the last few minutes that the people from Kiel broke away.
