The commander of the US forces in Afghanistan, Scott Miller, announced the start of an orderly withdrawal of foreign forces and the handover of military bases and equipment to the Afghan forces, stressing that his forces are able to protect themselves during the withdrawal process, as civilians and government were killed in the attacks in Wardak and Herat states.

Miller told reporters in Kabul that he was implementing US President Joe Biden's decision to end the longest US war, based on the fact that this long war in Afghanistan is no longer a US priority.

Earlier this month Biden said he would withdraw troops from Afghanistan before 9/11, which marks the twentieth anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Center and the US Department of Defense, which had triggered the Afghan war.

Miller explained that foreign forces will continue to possess "the military means and the ability to fully protect themselves during the withdrawal process, and will support Afghan security forces."

Since 2018, Miller has led US and NATO forces in Afghanistan, in their war with the Taliban and other groups.

Afghan National Security Adviser Hamdallah Moheb said yesterday that the foreign forces agreed to hand over their military equipment to the Afghan side after their withdrawal from the country.

Two days ago, CNN quoted military officials that the US withdrawal from Afghanistan began with the withdrawal of military equipment, and that the US forces would maintain military capabilities and provide support to Afghan forces.
