Demmin (dpa / mv) - The city of Demmin (Mecklenburg Lake District) has a new mayor.

As election supervisor Michael Koch said on Sunday, Thomas Witkowski (CDU) received 52.58 percent of the vote in the first ballot.

According to the preliminary official final result, Witkowski got 1,876 votes and left two other candidates, each with a little more than 23 percent of the vote, behind.

The Hanseatic city of Demmin lies on the three rivers Peene, Tollense and Trebel.

Witkowski has been in power for nine years, and the city has been in CDU hands since 1990.

The previous mayor was no longer running for reasons of age.

The turnout was 38.7 percent.
