This weekend, Jaïr Bolsonaro signed the 2021 federal budget, which provides 2 billion reais (302 million euros) for the Ministry of the Environment and the agencies it oversees, a decrease from 2.6 billion originally approved last year, according to the government gazette.

Jair Bolsonaro thus vetoed a list of environmental budget provisions worth $ 240 million (198 million euros), including spending on environmental law enforcement he had the day before. committed to respect.

And a few hours earlier ...

Because speaking Thursday April 22 at

the climate summit

organized by his American counterpart Joe Biden, Jaïr Bolsonaro had undertaken to stay within the nails of the Paris Agreement, to double the budget devoted to the application of environmental laws and to end illegal deforestation by 2030.

New promises from this inveterate climate skeptic, applauded by the US government but welcomed with caution in Brazil.

Brazilian NGOs have asked Joe Biden not to believe Bolsonaro's promises

in an open letter

.

Brazil is a party to the Paris Agreements, which the United States has just reinstated, but deforestation continues at a sustained rate and Jair Bolsonaro is asking for the sum of 10 billion dollars to protect the Amazon rainforest,

as compensation for any services rendered to the environment

.

The message of Brazilian NGOs was precisely intended to warn the United States which would be ready to financially support the fight against deforestation.
