Motorists, who use it daily, will have to change their habits.

The Couzon-au-Mont-d'Or bridge, which crosses the Saône north of Lyon, is closed to traffic for an indefinite period due to an incident.

On Friday, the driver of a truck carrying 20 tons of concrete rushed onto the structure although he was limited to vehicles over 3.5 tons.

Result: it damaged part of the bridge.

Several elements of the building, in particular the piles, were greatly weakened under the weight of the truck.

Visit of technical experts Monday

Technical experts from the metropolis of Lyon are due to go there on Monday to accurately measure the extent of the damage and determine the period, during which it could still remain closed to traffic (including bicycles).

"We came close to a real disaster," said Fabien Bagnon, vice-president of the metropolis of Lyon in charge of roads and mobility.
