Löffingen (dpa / lsw) - Again a gang of monkeys has escaped from a zoo in southern Baden.

The ten monkeys broke out of the enclosure on Saturday morning and hunted around in a forest, the police said.

It is the third time in two weeks that monkeys have escaped from the park.

The keepers of the zoo in Löffingen (Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district) tried to bring the monkeys back to their enclosure.

How the animals managed to break out was still unclear.

Most recently, four monkeys escaped from the zoo on Thursday. They were hanging out on a nearby federal highway. Several drivers saw the animals on Thursday morning on the edge of the B31, the police said. The animals then quickly moved away from the road and, according to the police, disappeared into the forest. By afternoon keepers had captured three of the four monkeys. The police could not say on Saturday whether the fourth animal was also caught.

Two dozen monkeys broke out of the same zoo two weeks ago.

Construction work in the park may have been the reason that the animals were able to find a way out of their enclosure.

After that, the animals were initially on the move in packs in the direction of the Dittishausen district.

In this case, too, the police could not tell whether the animals were recaptured.

The primates are said to be harmless, shy and fearful.

The police had asked not to speak to or feed the Barbary macaques.

Passers-by should also not try to catch the animals.

In such a case, the monkeys may be less friendly.
