Stuttgart / Berlin (dpa) - Baden-Württemberg wants to accelerate the discussion about the return of the Benin bronzes from German museums, which are considered looted property.

A roadmap also provides for going it alone without an agreement between the federal and state governments.

"The time is ripe," said Art Minister Theresia Bauer of the dpa in Berlin.

The Green politician is calling for a “far-reaching signal” from a round convened for Thursday by Minister of State for Culture Monika Grütters (CDU).

Museum experts and politicians will then want to advise on how to deal with Benin bronzes.

Benin bronzes can be found in numerous German museums.

Most of the objects came from British looting in 1897.

Bauer wants “that we should already make concrete agreements in this round, enter into a self-commitment with clearly defined steps”.

It sent the participating countries the roadmap with a “swift and structured process” in order to apply to the case of Benin the guidelines agreed two years ago by the federal and state governments on how to deal with collections from colonial contexts.
