French President Emmanuel Macron has a high profile on the climate issue.

The latest climate measure that looks set to become a reality is a stop to short domestic flights in the country.

The proposal has already been voted through in parliament and now looks to be hammered through in the Senate as well.

In that case, it means that domestic flights that can be replaced by train journeys of a maximum of 2.5 hours are prohibited.

In that case, it would not be possible to fly between Paris and Lyon.

Counted in miles, it is almost as if Sweden had banned flights between Stockholm and Gothenburg.

Greenpeace critical

The proposal is not completely unexpectedly criticized by the aviation industry, which states that the government now relies on nuclear power as the trains are electrically powered.

But Macron also receives criticism from elsewhere.

Greenpeace had wanted a ban on significantly longer domestic flights where train journeys would take up to six hours.

- It would bring about a real change in the attitude of the French when it comes to domestic travel.

The government has not wanted to go as far, says Jean-Francois Julliard, director general of Greenpeace France.

Expanded train network

But despite the criticism, the proposal still seems to have a relatively broad support, states SVT's European correspondent David Boati.

- These are routes where there is no loss of time to take the train.

And it should be remembered that France has a well-developed high-speed train network.

It is possible to get easily and quickly between French cities, he says.
