Bielefeld (dpa / lnw) - A semitrailer truck loaded with e-bikes burned down completely on Saturday on the A2 at the Vlotho-West junction.
Because of the increasing smoke, the autobahn had to be closed in both directions, the Bielefeld police headquarters announced in the evening.
Since the fire of the bicycle batteries produced poisonous gases, several groups from the Vlotho fire brigade, several tank fire engines and an NBC squad were alerted.
The truck driver was uninjured.
According to the police, there was no danger to other road users due to the large-scale cordon.
First, other motorists had made the truck driver aware that his towing vehicle was smoking.
The 59-year-old finally stopped on the hard shoulder and got out.
The flames spread to the trailer, destroying all bicycles and batteries.
