Prime Minister of Ethiopia: filling the Renaissance Dam on time

The Ethiopian National Security Council confirmed, on Saturday, that Addis Ababa will carry out the second filling of the Renaissance Dam as scheduled, despite international efforts to resolve disputes over the Renaissance Dam.

This came in a statement issued by the Ethiopian National Security Council after its meeting headed by Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.

The Ethiopian Prime Minister, Abiy Ahmed, accused external and internal parties, which he did not name, of causing chaos and destabilization in the country, which is witnessing internal and regional crises.

A statement issued by the Ethiopian cabinet, Saturday, after the National Security Council meeting, said that the meeting discussed internal and regional issues.

For its part, America has entered again on the line of crisis over the Renaissance Dam, in an attempt to resolve the issue that threatens the security of the entire region.

The intervention this time came through the appointment of Jeffrey Feltman as a special US envoy to the Horn of Africa, with specific goals on top of which are resolving the Renaissance Dam crisis through a new negotiating path that he hopes will open its door, after a 10-year stumble.

The US State Department stated, in a statement, that "the envoy of the Horn of Africa will work on the issues of the Tigray region, the dispute between Sudan and Ethiopia, and the Renaissance Dam file."

The Sudanese Minister of Irrigation and Water Resources, Yasser Abbas, confirmed yesterday that Ethiopia had rejected a Sudanese invitation to hold a summit at the level of heads of government to discuss the issue of the Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, and the Sudanese Prime Minister Abdullah Hamdok had called on April 13 his Ethiopian and Egyptian counterparts to come to Khartoum to search for solutions to the dam crisis Renaissance, after the failure of the last round of negotiations hosted by Congo Kinshasa in the first week of April.

The Sudanese Minister of Irrigation called for avoiding aggravating the situation in the region due to the Ethiopian intransigence regarding the Renaissance Dam as the second filling date approaches, and discussed with the Chargé d'Affairs of the US Embassy in Khartoum, Brian Shawkan, the latest developments in the negotiations and the obstacles that stand in the way of resuming them.
