Hamburg (dpa) - With a crane about 100 meters high and weighing about 400 tons, a new environmentally friendly refrigeration system was hoisted onto the Columbus house in Hafencity on Saturday.

The new system requires significantly less energy, said HIH Property Management (HPM).

The building's energy consumption is reduced by around 210,000 kilowatt hours per year, which corresponds to a CO2 saving of 100 tons per year.

The Columbus-Haus near the Elbphilharmonie, built in 2002, has been supplied with green electricity since 2017.

The energy efficiency of the new system is based, among other things, on the fact that it is partially operated with free cooling.

This is possible at outside temperatures of 8 degrees Celsius or below.

The measure is a good example to illustrate how sustainable property management is implemented in practice, it said.

The Columbus House is an office building with a total of 17,700 square meters of office space.

It consists of a tower (21 storeys) and a block (seven storeys) with an in-house underground car park.
