The Israeli army said that Palestinians in the Gaza Strip fired dozens of rockets at Israel yesterday, prompting it to respond with air strikes, after the resumption of nightly clashes during Ramadan between the Palestinians and the Israeli police in Jerusalem.

A statement by the Israeli army said that Chief of Staff Aviv Kochavi postponed a planned visit to Washington today, which was expected to focus on Iran, due to possible events and developments.

In Jerusalem, tension between Israelis and Palestinians was more than usual during Ramadan.

Protests by Palestinian youths last Thursday, angered by restrictions imposed on gathering during the month of Ramadan, turned into violent acts that resulted in dozens of arrests and injuries.

The disturbances resumed yesterday night, when Palestinian youths gathered again outside the Old City and clashed with hundreds of Israeli police.

For his part, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called for calm in Jerusalem, and said in a statement: "We want, first of all, to ensure respect for law and public order, and I call on all parties to calm."

In the occupied West Bank, Palestinian youths clashed with Israeli forces around military checkpoints near West Bank cities.

The Israeli Border Police said they dispersed hundreds who were throwing stones and petrol bombs.

A volunteer medic was wounded by rubber-coated metal bullets, during clashes that erupted with the Israeli forces at Qalandia military checkpoint north of Jerusalem, while dozens of people were suffocated due to the continuing confrontations at the northern entrance to Al-Bireh.

According to local sources and eyewitnesses in Jerusalem, a volunteer medic in the Civil Defense was treating the wounded. He was hit by rubber-coated metal bullets in the face and dozens of people suffocated during clashes near the Qalandia checkpoint.
