Mainz (AP) - FC Bayern Munich has given the first chance of the 31st championship title after an unusually weak performance.

The record champion surprisingly lost 1: 2 (0: 2) at FSV Mainz 05 and had to postpone the title celebration for the time being.

Despite the fourth defeat of the season, Munich can still make the ninth championship in a row on the couch this weekend if pursuers RB Leipzig should lose their home game against VfB Stuttgart on Sunday.

Jonathan Burkhardt in the third minute and Robin Quaison (37th) shot the strong running and fighting Rheinhessen to their first home win against the industry leader since November 27, 2011. Robert Lewandowski shortened for Bayern in the fourth minute of stoppage time.

It was the 36th goal of the season for the world footballer, who is now only four goals missing to set Gerd Müller's Bundesliga record.

Due to the unexpected success, the 05er extended their winning streak to seven games without defeat and gained further air in the fight against relegation from the Bundesliga. With 34 points, Mainz moved up to twelfth place in the table and are now eight points ahead of Hertha BSC in the first direct relegation place. The Berliners, who have played two fewer games because of their corona quarantine, will be the next opponent of coach Bo Svensson's team on May 3.

The Bavarians were shaken from the beginning. After David Alaba defended his header too short and national goalkeeper Manuel Neuer reacted too late, Burkhardt scored early with a shot from the turn to give Mainz the lead, which made the record champions sweat. Danny Latza (10th) hit the post with his head, then Quaison (16th) failed from close range on the strongly reacting newcomer. Shortly afterwards, a deflected shot from Danny da Costa (18th) hit the aluminum again.

Bayern acted pomadig and looked surprised by the offensive power of the home side, who won 86 percent of the duels in the first half hour.

The favorite struggled against the aggressive and strong Mainz team and only had one chance in the first half.

Lewandowski, who made his comeback after a four-week injury break, shot the ball far over the goal from a promising position.

The Pole was not only noticeably lacking match practice in this scene.

Even with his teammates, little came together.

As in the 5-2 win in the first half of the season, Bayern went into the break with a 2-0 deficit.

Coach Hansi Flick, who would like to leave Munich at the end of the season, reacted to the weak performance and brought three fresh forces at the start with Eric-Maxim Choupo-Moting, Jamal Musiala and Tanguy Nianzou.

Leon Goretzka, Leroy Sané and Kingsley Coman stayed in the cabin.

In contrast to the successful race to catch up on January 3, Bayern remained pale in the attack.

Although the guests now clearly controlled the action and allowed Mainz hardly any well thought-out counterattacks, the Munich team could hardly put themselves in the limelight except for the late goal and left the field as a deserved loser against the compact FSV defense.
