Mannheim (AP) - Adler Mannheim with a comeback victory and Eisbären Berlin have avoided a surprisingly early end in the playoff quarter-finals for the German ice hockey championship.

In particular, top favorites Mannheim had to tremble for a long time in the decisive third game against the Straubing Tigers on Saturday before the 4: 3 (0: 2, 0: 1, 3: 0) success after extra time was certain.

Mannheim already looked like the sure loser, but made up for a 3-0 draw in the last ten minutes of regular time.

Thanks to a 5: 3 (0: 2, 4: 1, 1: 0), the Berlin team won the best-of-three series against the Iserlohn Roosters 2: 1.

The Grizzlys Wolfsburg managed to advance with a 3: 2 (0: 1, 1: 1, 0: 1) after extra time with the Fischtown Pinguins from Bremerhaven.

Bremerhaven had only saved itself in overtime three seconds before the end.

In the semi-final series starting on Monday, Mannheim and Wolfsburg as well as Berlin and Munich conquerors Ingolstadt will meet.

The other series will also be held in best-of-three mode.

This means that, unlike in normal seasons, only two wins instead of four are necessary to advance.

The season, which is heavily influenced by the coronavirus pandemic, will take place this time much shorter and in a different mode.

The master should be determined no later than May 7th.
