Bochum (dpa / lnw) - Germany's largest real estate company Vonovia is testing in Bochum how a housing estate can largely supply itself with energy.

An electrolyser for the production of hydrogen from electricity, fuel cells and heat pumps should ensure that at least 60 percent of the heat required for the 81 apartments is generated in a climate-neutral manner.

NRW Economics Minister Andreas Pinkwart (FDP) praised the concept on Friday as an “important contribution to the energy transition”.

Vonovia boss Rolf Buch emphasized that older residential buildings could not be converted in a climate-neutral way with thermal insulation and other renovation measures alone.

In Bochum, the concept supported by scientists should therefore be used to find out how a climate-neutral building stock could succeed with affordable tenants by 2050.

If things are going well in Bochum, Vonovia wants to try to transfer the concept nationwide.

With around 355,000 apartments, the group is Germany's largest landlord.
