Cuxhaven / Neuwerk (dpa) - The carriage rides through the Wadden Sea between the island of Neuwerk and Cuxhaven are threatened: A deep creek, the so-called Duhner Loch, is increasingly preventing the crossing by tractor or carriage.

"I didn't get through 30 times last year," says Wattwagen entrepreneur Kai Stelling from Cuxhaven.

The 2020 season was already three months shorter than normal due to the corona.

The creek is now "a huge problem".

The watercourse connects the Weser with the Elbe estuary.

At low tide it should actually be passable.

“Five or six years ago we were able to trot through,” recalls Stelling.

The lowest water level in Duhner Loch is now 80 centimeters.

At 1.30 meters there was no getting through.

And that is very often the case.

The State Agency for Water Management, Coastal Protection and Nature Conservation (NLWKN) had installed so-called big packs made of jute, filled with sand, in the area of Duhner Loch as a barrier around two years ago.

This should prevent the creek from deepening.

"Unfortunately, the hoped-for effect did not materialize at the time," said a spokesman.

However, the state company currently sees no urgent need for action.
