Wiesbaden (dpa / lhe) - Around 414,000 children and young people in Hesse currently have a school ticket for trips on buses and trains.

That is a little less than in the school year 2018/19 with around 425,000 active cards.

This emerges from a response from the Ministry of Transport in Wiesbaden to a state parliament request from the FDP.

The state government subsidized the ticket last year with 20 million euros.

The state had also spent this amount on this in previous years.

In view of the effects of the corona pandemic, it is currently not possible to estimate how the cost of the ticket will develop in the future.

"On the basis of the available figures, however, it is not to be expected that there will be major differences in the need for subsidies from year to year," said the ministry.

The student ticket, which can also be used by trainees, is valid for all of Hesse and costs 365 euros as an annual ticket.

This means that buses, trams, subways, suburban trains and regional trains can be used throughout the country.

Some children and young people - who live further away from their school - can have the costs reimbursed by the school authorities.

According to the latest figures from the ministry, this affected around 181,000 students in the 2018/2019 school year.

Changes to the regulations are currently not planned, it said from Wiesbaden.

If all Hessian schoolchildren and trainees were to get the ticket free of charge, the state would have to spend around 250 million euros per year, the ministry estimated.
