His Highness praised the great progress made by the UAE in the clean energy sector, and said: “Today we have two solar energy stations among the largest in the world, and we are working to establish a third plant that will be the largest independent solar energy station in the world, and the UAE also hosts the permanent headquarters of the International Renewable Energy Agency. Regarding the UAE’s efforts and support to spread clean and renewable energy globally, His Highness said: “We have invested in successful renewable energy projects in 70 countries around the world through soft loans, because we believe that this type of energy is the ideal future for humanity.”

His Highness indicated that the UAE is the first country in the Middle East region to implement technologies for carbon capture, use and storage, and that its oil sector is the lowest in the world in carbon emissions.

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum announced the UAE’s participation with a group of active partners to launch the Agricultural Climate Innovation Project, which is a new initiative to support research, development and innovation in food systems over the next five years.

At the end of his speech, His Highness, Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, stressed the need to strengthen international cooperation to work for climate as an urgent issue and a major global challenge, and His Highness said: “Climate change is not a temporary issue but rather a continuous global challenge. All as a team to preserve the planet for future generations, the cost will be much greater in the future .. The UAE is committed to an approach of cooperation and joint action for the sake of the climate .. The launch of the initiative came during the speech of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, as part of the work of the second day of the summit, in which he stressed the need to strengthen international cooperation to work for the climate as an urgent issue and a major global challenge.

The launch of the initiative comes in response to the continuous increase in population and the increasing need for food production in the world today, at a time when the repercussions of climate change on heat and weather, in addition to the seasonal effects on agricultural practices, are pushing many farmers towards the edge of poverty, which is what It requires the development of innovative new technologies and methods to enable the sector to deal with the challenges of climate change.

The agricultural sector also contributes about a quarter of the world's greenhouse gas emissions, and is also one of the sectors most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change.

On this occasion, Dr. Sultan bin Ahmed Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and the UAE's Special Envoy for Climate Change, said: “The UAE gives top priority to global innovation in food production, given its dependence to a large extent on food imports, and through the Agricultural Climate Innovation Initiative. "We will work with the United States and our other partners to stimulate investment and strengthen commitment in this sector, just as we did in the energy sector."

Commenting on this initiative, John Kerry, the US Special Presidential Envoy for Climate Change, said: “The United States is proud to launch this ground-breaking initiative for agricultural innovation for climate with the UAE and many other supportive partners.

During my last visit to the UAE, I was amazed at the innovative solutions and practices that are being applied in dealing with food and climate challenges. ”

The Minister of State for Food and Water Security, Maryam Bint Mohammed Al Muhairi, affirmed: “The UAE adopts a clear approach towards enhancing its food security according to sustainable foundations, adopting modern technology and innovation as a working method in its national food security strategies. Modern technology and moving forward with an integrated system for research and development in a way that serves to find solutions to nutritional challenges.

On his part, Tom Vilsack, US Secretary of Agriculture, said: “I am delighted that the United States is participating in the launch of the Agricultural Climate Innovation Initiative, which seeks to achieve a critical goal of accelerating the pace of global agricultural innovation by intensifying research and development efforts, and highlighting agricultural solutions based on Scientific data for climate change mitigation and adaptation.

For his part, Alok Sharma, Chair of the 26th session of the Conference of States Parties (COP26), said: “The United Kingdom welcomes the new proposal between the United States of America and the United Arab Emirates on agricultural innovation as a positive contribution to the efforts of the COP26 Presidency on Nature, where investments in technology Agriculture is essential to stimulating the innovation needed to build resilience, counter the implications of climate change and reverse the losses of biodiversity.

The "Agricultural Climate Innovation Initiative" will be officially launched during the 26th session of the Conference of the States Parties to the United Nations Climate Change (COP 26) in November 2021, as the initiative seeks to build a broader alliance to stimulate more investments in agricultural research and development.

The initiative also affirms the importance of investing in innovation, research and development in the field of agriculture, improving current methods and means, and providing new and sustainable ways to increase agricultural production and increase incomes.
