- In recent decades with an increasingly warmer climate, we have seen that the birds come earlier and earlier, but this year that trend has been broken, says Magnus Hellström, bird station manager at Ottenby bird station.

Later than usual

Thrushes and robins are due to arrive, but the cold April weather has made them later than usual.

However, the first birds arrived as usual in February, such as song larks, starlings and tufted lapwings.

Praktejdern has been seen in Stora rör and you can also see it at Öland's southern cape, but he suggests that you prefer to go to other areas.

- It is so wide at this headland that it becomes difficult to see it, but if you go to Färjestaden or Kalmar you can see a handful, or up to ten.

2020 a record year

The ringing of birds began on the 15th of March, and at present about two thousand birds have been ringed, half of which were on the first of April.

- It was the only really good day for ringing.

2020 was a record year for bird tagging with 30,000 thousand ring-tagged birds, but whether this year will be a worse year is difficult to predict, says Magnus Hellström.
