Rostock / Kiel (dpa) - The state anglers' association Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and the sport fishing association Schleswig-Holstein have appealed to the hundreds of herring anglers along the Baltic Sea coast to observe the animal welfare criteria.

It is observed again and again that anglers take the fish off the hook and throw them into the bucket without further treatment.

The Animal Welfare Act stipulates that the fish must be stunned by a strong blow on the head and then killed by a throat cut.

Without this procedure, the animals die painfully slowly.

"An absurdity, you mustn't lose your humility in front of the creature," commented Kilian Neubert from the MV Angler Association.

"Anyone who does not handle the creature appropriately will get a criminal complaint," emphasized Rüdiger Neukamm from Schleswig-Holstein's sport fishing association.
