Health officials in Gaza say that the rapid increase in cases and deaths from "Covid-19" is putting great pressure on hospitals in the Gaza Strip, pushing them towards complete fullness.

With the rampant poverty in the Gaza Strip, lack of medical resources, skepticism about vaccines and vaccinations, and the unavailability of accurate data on "Covid-19", and with the usual gatherings during the month of Ramadan, Palestinians fear that the rapid spread of the disease will increase, which began before Ramadan on April 13th. .

Gaza health officials say about 70% of intensive care units are full, up from 37% at the end of March.

The sector witnessed 86 deaths during the past six days, which is an increase of 43% over the number in the previous week.

Dr. Ayadil Saparbekov, Acting Director of the World Health Organization’s office in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, said: “Hospitals are about to reach their full capacity. They have not reached that yet, but severe and critical cases have increased dramatically in the past three weeks, which is a matter of concern.”

The daily infection rate with the Coronavirus in Gaza increased to 43% this week, but Saparbekov said that the percentage may be exaggerated, because the lack of tests makes the count mostly limited to those who already have symptoms.

He also said that Gaza does not have the ability to identify rapidly spreading mutated strains when tests are carried out, which means that accurate data are not available on them.

No truce

Graves are not free of pressure either. In Gaza City, the undertaker, Muhammad Al-Harish, told «Reuters» that he bury up to 10 deaths from the disease per day, after he was buried one or two a month ago.

Al-Harsh, who used to bury the dead during the war between Israel and Gaza in 2014, added: “The war period was difficult, but the (Corona) period is the most difficult in our work, because in the war we used to dig graves and bury the dead during the armistice period, or in the ceasefire. But in (Corona) there is no truce. ”

Gaza, which is densely populated and home to 2 million Palestinians, has been cut off from the outside world for years due to the Israeli blockade.
