Blankenberg (dpa / mv) - Railway fan Marcel Schneider has made it his business to revive the railway line between Karow and Wismar, which has been closed for years.

The 27-year-old has recently been using a multi-purpose rail device (MZG) on the route, which he bought from the Berlin railroad fans.

The device was built in Leipzig in 1986.

It was brought from Berlin to Borkow in a low-loader and put on the rails there with the help of a heavy-duty crane, reports Schneider.

Now the 27-year-old drives the MZG between Karow and Wismar on a voluntary basis to maintain the route. His goal is for the section to shine in its old splendor in five years. Among other things, old signage and lighting are to be rebuilt for this purpose. “I want to bring back a piece of the old days to the older generation,” says Schneider. Some people have already reacted enthusiastically to his commitment. "It looks like it did back then," several of them would have said. He says he is happy to be able to preserve a piece of cultural heritage in this way.

Schneider is supported in his project by, among others, Chris Wiechmann, who drives along as a security guard.

“You cannot drive over unrestricted level crossings alone,” says Schneider, explaining the importance of a security post on the route.

Soon a second MZG and an excavator will be added, which Schneider will also pay for out of pocket.

“I do this because I enjoy it and it brings joy to people,” he says.

The railway line between Karow and Wismar was closed for passenger traffic as early as 1996.

From 2002 there was no longer any freight traffic.

A tourism company offers trolley rides on the section.
