Los Angeles (AP) - Data from the Snapchat photo app show a gradual return to normal everyday life with the ongoing corona vaccination campaign in the USA.

"We are seeing that people are going out more and meeting friends, or are returning to work and learning," said founder and boss Evan Spiegel at the presentation of the latest quarterly figures on Thursday.

Snapchat now hopes to accelerate the already high growth from the pandemic period.

Because with a higher level of activity in everyday life, the app is used more.

In March, Snapchat recorded more new friendships and exchanges of messages between users.

Currently, the 280 million daily users open the app an average of 30 times a day - and each time there is an opportunity for advertisers to present them with advertising.

In the US of 330 million people, around 200 million corona vaccinations were given in the first three months of President Joe Biden's tenure.

At the same time, the Snapchat makers believe that corona habits such as online shopping will play a bigger role than before even after the end of the pandemic.

During the crisis they relied heavily on so-called augmented reality, in which digital objects are inserted into the real environment on the display.

This not only resulted in fun applications, but also business models such as the opportunity to try out fashion or cosmetics virtually.

The bill worked: quarterly sales jumped by around two-thirds year-on-year to $ 769.6 million (around EUR 640.5 million), as the operating company Snap announced.

For the current quarter, Snap expects an increase in sales between 80 and 85 percent and 290 million users daily.

The loss dropped from around $ 306 million a year ago to just under $ 287 million.

The number of daily active users rose in the past quarter by 15 million to 280 million.

93 million of these come from the home market of the USA and 77 million from Europe.

For the first time, the majority of users of Android smartphones were on Snapchat.

The Google operating system dominates the market with a share of more than 80 percent.

But Snapchat has long been held back by technical problems with the Android app, so that iPhone users made up the majority.

Snapchat was originally known for photos that disappear on their own.

In the meantime, the app has also tried its hand as a platform for media content.
