Moscow (AP) - Saxony's Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer renewed his invitation to the Kremlin chief to visit Dresden during his phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

«The Russian President is cordially invited.

The people in the Free State of Saxony would be very happy about his visit, ”said the head of government of the German Press Agency in Moscow.

Kretschmer had already invited Putin to the International Economic Forum there in 2019 after a meeting in St. Petersburg.

But this has not happened so far because of the corona pandemic.

«We have renewed the invitation.

We'll see if it turns out that way in the end, "said the Prime Minister after the phone call, which the Kremlin had informed about on Thursday.

During the GDR era, the 68-year-old Putin worked as an officer of the Soviet secret service KGB in Dresden, which was notorious for its political persecution of dissenters.

The reason for Putin's visit to Dresden could be the German-Russian exhibition "Dreams of Freedom" planned for October in the Albertinum, said Kretschmer.

The show with art from the romantic era 200 years ago was opened on Thursday evening in the presence of Kretschmer and can be seen in the new Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow until August 8th.

"Maybe this is an opportunity to meet."
