Moscow (AP) - Saxony's Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer assumes that the Kremlin critic Alexej Navalny has been treated after a phone call with Russia's President Vladimir Putin.

"I got the statement that medical care is guaranteed," said the CDU politician during a visit to the Russian capital, Moscow.

That is the expectation on the German side.

"That is a minimum of humanitarian support that you have to give someone," said Kretschmer.

Meanwhile, Nawalny's team announced that the opposition activist had been taken to a hospital outside the prison camp for examinations.

The Kremlin had previously announced in writing after the phone call that the situation surrounding the opposition activist, who had been on hunger strike for more than three weeks, had been addressed.

On Wednesday there were again nationwide demonstrations in support of the 44-year-old in Russia, despite warnings from the authorities.

According to the civil rights portal ovdinfo.org, more than 1900 people were arrested during the unauthorized protests in almost 100 Russian cities, most of them in St. Petersburg.

Human rights activists then criticized arbitrary arrests.

The organization Human Rights Watch said that there was less police violence at the rallies than at the beginning of the year.

"But the tough crackdown on freedom of assembly by the authorities is completely unjustified."

Navalny himself praised the courage of the demonstrators.

He was proud to be part of this great cause, it said on the opposition's Instagram account.

«I am one of you who is not silent in the face of injustice and lawlessness.

Who is not afraid, despite all the anger that is now coming from the Kremlin. "

To be afraid now, to lose hot ones and to gamble away the future.

The 44-year-old opposition member, who barely survived a poison attack last year, refused to eat in order to obtain treatment from an independent doctor.

The politician recently complained of back problems, paralysis in the limbs, fever and cough.

How he is actually doing cannot be checked independently.

Navalny's personal doctor Anastassija Wassiljewa confirmed on Twitter that independent doctors had examined him. These are specialists from the Vladimir region east of Moscow, where Navalny's prison camp is located. "That is already a big step." Vasilyeva also demanded personal access to the 44-year-old. In a letter published by the media, she and other doctors who said they had evaluated the test results appealed to the 44-year-old to end the hunger strike immediately so that he does not die. The investigations were therefore already carried out on Tuesday. Navalny was only moved to another penal camp with an infirmary on Sunday.

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe demanded that Russia's best-known opponent should receive the necessary medical care and a doctor of his choice.

A resolution passed also states that the fact that he has obviously not received adequate medical care so far could raise questions about his right to protection from inhuman and degrading treatment.

The panel also insisted on his immediate release.

Meanwhile, the Russian government's human rights commissioner, Tatyana Moskalkova, said Navalny's detention conditions and medical care were in line with international standards. "It was not found that Navalny was treated brutally or roughly." Like other inmates, he could sleep for eight hours without a break. Navalny had spoken of torture methods because prison guards woke him every hour at night.

Before the demonstrations on Wednesday, the police arrested several Navalny supporters and searched the offices of his employees.

The action against Nawalny's press spokeswoman Kira Jarmysch, who, according to her lawyer, has to be detained for ten days, caused particular outrage.

She is accused of having called for the unauthorized protests on the Internet - although she has been under house arrest for weeks and has no access to the Internet.
