Tokyo (dpa) - Japan's Olympic organizers are not considering canceling the summer games planned for July despite the renewed Corona emergency for Tokyo and increasing numbers of infections.

"We are not thinking about a cancellation," affirmed Seiko Hashimoto, President of the Organizing Committee.

On the same day, the government of Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga decided, as expected, to declare a state of emergency in Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto and Hyogo Prefecture.

It is valid from Sunday to May 11th.

The so-called "Golden Week", a series of national holidays, falls during this period.

"We have to take targeted action while many people are on break during Golden Week to get the virus under control," said Suga.

However, visitors to major events should be excluded.

Just three months before the planned Olympic Games, Japan has now imposed a state of emergency on the Japanese capital for the third time.

The reason is the strong spread of new variants of the coronavirus.

In the coming week, a second version of a manual with detailed rules and corona measures for athletes will be published, it said.

In addition, consultations with the International Olympic Committee on the open question of admitting Japanese viewers are planned for next week.

Foreign fans as well as the families of international athletes have already excluded Japan's Olympic makers.

Tokyo hosts the Olympic Games and Paralympics in the summer.

The games had been postponed for a year due to the corona crisis.

Japan has come through the pandemic much better than many other countries.

But now the infections are increasing again due to new virus variants.
