Erfurt (dpa / th) - The state chairman of the police union (GdP) in Thuringia, Kai Christ, has resigned after media reports about investigations against him.

"I resigned from my position as state chairman of the GdP today because of the reports," Christ told the German press agency on Friday.

With him, GdP state vice-president Thomas Müller also vacated his post, as the GdP state branch manager Kerstin Henniger said of the dpa.

The resignations were made «to protect the GdP».

The news magazine "Spiegel" and the MDR reported on Friday about investigations by the public prosecutor's office against Christ on charges of sexual assault. Christ was reported by a former employee because of this. A spokesman for the public prosecutor's office in Erfurt confirmed the investigation “against a police officer”. It is about the suspicion of sexual coercion. The investigation has been ongoing since March 2020 after the "allegedly injured party" filed a complaint. The spokesman did not provide any further information.

Compared to the MDR, Christ, who has been GdP state chairman since 2014, denied the allegations and said that he had requested access to the files through his lawyer.

According to the MDR, Christ made the declaration of resignation on Friday at a meeting of the executive state executive that had met since the morning.

The GdP federal chairman Oliver Malchow said on dpa request that the investigation against Christ had only become known to the union through a request from the "Spiegel".

Before the woman was reported, there was no evidence of suspicion against the country chief.
