Paris (AP) - There is great anger among French fishermen about access to British waters after Brexit.

More than 100 fishermen blocked trucks loaded with fish from Great Britain in Boulogne-sur-Mer last night, French media reported.

However, only a few trucks came.

The protest is mainly directed against the slow issue of fishing licenses in London.

Boulogne is the main fishing port in France.

Some fishermen met this morning with the President of the Regional Council, Xavier Bertrand.

“They have been waiting for the promised licenses since January 1st.

These must now be issued, and the fishermen who are unable to work must be compensated, ”he wrote on Twitter.

According to the French news agency AFP, Olivier Leprêtre, president of the regional fisheries committee, warned against shifting up a gear if nothing happened at European level.

The Minister for the Seas, Annick Girardin, and European Secretary of State Clément Beaune had previously intervened.

"The full granting of licenses for access to British waters and the rapid clarification of essential issues (...) must be ensured as soon as possible," it said in a statement.

In it they call on the EU Commission to act decisively to ensure the full application of the fisheries agreement with Great Britain.

After the British left the EU, there was a complicated dispute over total catches and their distribution.

At times, negotiations on a Brexit trade pact threatened to fail due to the fish issue.

In December, the EU countries agreed on temporary fishing quotas until the end of July.
