Weißenfels (dpa / sa) - The employees of the Tönnies slaughterhouse in Weißenfels (Burgenlandkreis) want to demonstrate today at noon (12.30 p.m.) for better working conditions and higher wages.

With a campaign lasting several hours, the pressure on employers to conclude a collective agreement for the approximately 160,000 people who work in the meat industry nationwide, wrote the food-gourmet-restaurants (NGG) union.

"Several corona outbreaks among slaughterhouse employees in the past year have created awareness of the harsh working conditions, especially of Eastern European employees," said Jörg Most from the NGG region Leipzig-Halle-Dessau.

After the prohibition of work contracts by politicians, the company management must prove that it is ready for a real change in the meat industry.

The Tönnies plant in Weißenfels (Burgenlandkreis) is the largest slaughterhouse in Eastern Germany.
