Berlin (AP) - Lower Saxony's CDU boss Bernd Althusmann calls for ex-parliamentary group leader Friedrich Merz to be included in a team around Chancellor candidate Armin Laschet.

The CDU boss could have a deep impact on society - but should be carried by a team, Althusmann told the news portal "ThePioneer" (Friday).

Althusmann demanded that Merz should be involved in a team with his economic and political competence.

Laschet should accept Merz's offer to be involved, and Merz should “work, collaborate, be involved in the Union,” emphasized the CDU regional chief.

The CDU must "fulfill the entire spectrum of society, but also our party to a certain extent".

Merz was defeated by Laschet in the race for the CDU chairmanship, but had supported the party leader in the question of the candidate for chancellor.

In a day-long power struggle with CSU leader Markus Söder, Laschet prevailed.

Althusmann now urged unity in the Union.

If you stop “teasing” now, you could achieve well over 30 percent in the upcoming federal election.
