London / Berlin (dpa) - Uber is entering the food delivery business in Germany, which is currently controlled by Lieferando.

The driving service broker wants to start its Uber Eats service in Berlin in a few weeks, as the responsible top manager Pierre-Dimitri Gore-Coty told the Financial Times.

In the corona pandemic, food deliveries became a much more important business area for Uber, while there were slumps in transportation services.

Uber has already brought a large number of large and small restaurants in Berlin on board, said a spokesman.

The aim is to fill a gap in the market in Germany with the supply of delivery logistics to restaurants: most restaurants have so far delivered themselves.

Uber works in Germany with local delivery companies that employ couriers.

The rental car chauffeurs are similarly employed in the brokerage of vehicle services by fleet partners.

According to Gore-Coty, there is interest in the German market in an alternative to the clear market leader Lieferando, as the service belonging to the Just Eat Takeaway group has "extraordinarily high" fees.

Lieferando countered that the company's restaurant partners would not only get a logistics service, but also other services such as cheaper purchases of catering items.

The head of Just Eat Takeaway, Jitse Groen, downplayed the consequences of Uber Eats' entry weeks ago.

"Our biggest competitor in Germany is the telephone - not Deliveroo or Uber Eats," he said, pointing out that most consumers still called the restaurants.
