Neustadt / Weinstrasse (dpa / lrs) - A train has hit a car at a level crossing in Neustadt an der Weinstrasse.

Neither the driver nor the people on the train were injured in the accident on Thursday afternoon, the police said.

According to her own account, the 72-year-old woman saw too late that the traffic light was on red because of the low sun, the police said.

When the barriers closed, the woman braked her car in shock - instead of driving on, she wanted to back up.

The approaching train could be braked thanks to an early warning system, but it collided with the rear of the car.

The police said the total damage was at least 65,000 euros.

"The driver must expect a fine of 350 euros and a driving ban of one month," it said.
