Three men found guilty of attempted murder against police officers in Viry-Châtillon, in Essonne in 2016 decided to appeal to the Supreme Court, their lawyers indicated, confirming information from Europe 1. The latter had been sentenced on Sunday at the end of a 18-year prison trial.

The cassation appeal constitutes a means of appeal open against decisions rendered in the last resort, that is to say against the judgments of the courts of appeal or judgments which cannot be appealed.

The other two convicted will not go to cassation

At the end of a six-week trial behind closed doors, the Paris Assize Court on Sunday sentenced five young men for attacking and burning police officers in Viry-Châtillon in 2016.

Three of them were sentenced to 18 years imprisonment, one 8 years and the last 6 years in prison.

The latter two will not appeal in cassation, said their lawyers.

The other eight defendants were acquitted.

This verdict was denounced by police unions, victims' lawyers and part of the political class as too lenient.
