The information comes from Robert Mardini, Director General of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland.

The information comes from staff at hospitals and clinics in the region, who have read stories of extreme sexual violence.

"Terrible testimony"

It is not too often that the neutral organization ICRC reports on events on war fronts and in conflict zones, but Mardini says that the information from Tigray shook him:

"I have not heard of such terrible testimonies in over two decades in the humanitarian field," Mardini said in an interview with AFP.

Mardini has then worked in both Syria and Yemen.

Soldiers commit sex crimes

According to medical staff, among others, soldiers from Ethiopia and neighboring Eritrea have, among other things, raped victims through gang rapes during the five-month-long conflict.

- This is now our highest priority: to prevent it from happening again and of course to support the victims, Mardini says.

The UN is deeply concerned

The issue of sexual violence in Tigray was discussed at the UN Security Council on Thursday, where especially violence against women and girls was raised.

"Security Council members express deep concern over allegations of human rights abuses and abuses, including sexual violence. . . ” states the 15 member states of the Council in a statement. It requires an investigation into the events and that those responsible are brought to justice.
