Darmstadt (dpa) - The German PEN center will in future reside in a new office on the historic Mathildenhöhe in Darmstadt.

From there, the writers' association wants to manage the fate of the organization in the larger domicile made available by the city, but also organize readings, discussions and encounters with literature enthusiasts.

"The spacious rooms offer us the chance to bring literature to the fore and emphasize its social significance," said PEN Secretary General Heinrich Peuckmann after moving within Darmstadt.

The German PEN, based in Darmstadt, is one of more than 150 writers' associations worldwide that advocate freedom of speech.

PEN stands for Poets, Essayists, Novelists.

Darmstadt is hoping for the Unesco World Heritage title this year for the Mathildenhöhe artists' colony.

The Unesco World Heritage Committee should decide on this in the summer.
