Karben / Frankfurt (dpa) - The electronics plant of the automotive supplier Continental in Karben, Hesse, due to be closed, is expected to receive a grace period.

After warning strikes and lengthy negotiations, IG Metall and the company agreed in a social wage agreement that production would not be phased out until the end of 2025.

Both sides confirmed this on Thursday.

At the originally planned closure date at the end of 2023, at least 150 people should now be employed at the plant. The “Engineering Services” unit with 187 employees will also remain at the site permanently, as announced by IG Metall. In total, there are around 1100 employees in the automotive plant. The neighboring plant of the Conti rubber division is not affected.

According to IG Metall, more than 300 people can take advantage of an extensive program for partial retirement.

For the rest there are severance payments and an employment company that is supposed to qualify employees and place them with other employers.

Union members would be better off with bonus regulations, explained the Frankfurt representative of IG Metall, Michael Ehrhardt.

According to an earlier agreement, the trainees can also complete their apprenticeship.

They should also receive a takeover offer, but not necessarily for Karben.

Erhardt expressed the hope that the remaining CES unit could expand its business areas in the coming months and possibly hire additional people.

The company and the union want to look for suitable subsequent users for the buildings that will become vacant.

The union had already carried out a 24-hour warning strike and was about to vote on an indefinite strike.

The committees and members now have until May 12 to vote on the outcome of the negotiations.
