Berlin (dpa / bb) - Under pressure from the Constitutional Court, the Berlin House of Representatives has lowered the barriers for small parties to participate in the election on September 26th.

In plenary on Thursday evening, all parliamentary groups voted for a corresponding amendment to the electoral law due to the corona pandemic.

Specifically, this concerns the number of supporters' signatures that parties not represented in parliament have to provide in order to participate in the House of Representatives election.

Submitting constituency proposals now requires 11 (previously 25) signatures, 46 (previously 100) for district lists and 550 (previously 1100) signatures for state lists.

Because collecting supporters' signatures is more difficult than usual this year due to the risk of infection, the House of Representatives decided on February 11 to halve the minimum number.

The Berlin Constitutional Court, however, conceded the regulation on March 17 after complaints from five small parties: The quorums are still too high in Corona times.

The constitutional court suggested a reduction to 20 to 30 percent of the level before the corona crisis.

The quorums now decided by the House of Representatives are between 22 and 25 percent.

They are only valid for this year's election.

The parties have until July 20th to collect supporter signatures.
