Hamburg (dpa / lno) - Hamburg will be the venue for a women's tennis tournament again this summer and for the first time in 19 years.

The WTA event in the 250 category will be held from July 7th to 11th, parallel to the second week of Wimbledon, announced the organizers on Thursday.

The women play directly in front of the men on the facility at Hamburg's Rothenbaum.

Top stars who are in the round of 16 at Wimbledon will not be eligible as participants.

For the Hanseatic city, however, the return of women's tennis is a great success.

The last time women served in Hamburg was in 2002, and since then only men.

“A linked women's and men's tournament is the best product for me.

This means that Hamburg now has a unique selling point in the German tennis landscape », said tournament director Sandra Reichel.

The organizers had taken over the license of an event previously held in Latvia, the date for the women's premiere of the Hamburg European Open was still open.

The organizers also flirted with a parallel double event with men and women.

Hamburg will be the fourth WTA event in Germany this year.

In addition to the current Stuttgart indoor clay court tournament, two grass tournaments are taking place in Berlin and Bad Homburg.

The premiere of a women's event in Cologne had been postponed by one year to 2022 due to the tense corona situation in Germany.

The Hamburg organizers want to react "flexibly" to the corona situation.

"One thing is clear: we will only start selling tickets when we have more planning security in this regard," said Reichel.
