Hahn (dpa) - In Corona times, the Hunsrück airport Hahn recorded a plus above the industry average for freight - and a significant decrease in the passenger business.

In the first quarter of 2021, freight increased by 52.5 percent to 64,723 tons compared to the same period in the previous year, as the Association of German Airports (ADV) announced on Thursday.

The number of passengers fell by 83.7 percent to 32,391. The website of the former Hahn military airport did not show a single passenger flight on Thursday.

According to ADV, German air traffic remained “in the grip of the pandemic” with its far-reaching travel restrictions and a persistent lockdown in the first quarter of 2021.

Freight traffic, on the other hand, benefited from the boom in online trading and from the container bottlenecks in sea traffic.

The main owner of the Hunsrück airport, the large Chinese group HNA, has got into financial difficulties and is to be rebuilt.

In 2017, HNA bought 82.5 percent of Hahn Airport from the state of Rhineland-Palatinate for around 15 million euros.

The state of Hesse holds the remaining 17.5 percent.

The airport and the Chinese state assured that nothing would change in airport operations.
