Frankfurt (Oder) (dpa / bb) - From cinema to museum: The cinema for young people in Frankfurt (Oder) is to become one of the two locations of the Brandenburg State Museum (BLMK) for modern art in the future.

Construction will start in 2025, as the Ministry of Culture announced on Thursday.

The implementation competition for the design of the building is due to start soon.

"The movie theater is an important place in Frankfurt's identity and part of the city's soul," said Culture Minister Manja Schüle. «During the GDR era, many people attended concerts and cultural events in the Lichtspielhaus and celebrated youth consecration. The conversion of the building from a cinema to an art museum is thus also a piece of East German self-assurance ”, said the SPD politician. Schüle visited the monument with GDR architecture cinema on Thursday together with Mayor René Wilke (left) and BLMK director Ulrike Kremeier.

After completion, the art museum, which mainly shows GDR art and art from the later, is to move from its three previously divided locations in Frankfurt (Oder) to the building on Heilbronner Strasse.

With its further location in Cottbus, the museum, which arose from the diesel power plant and the Museum of Young Art, is home to more than 42,000 works.

The movie theater was opened at the beginning of the 20th century as the first movie theater in the city of Frankfurt (Oder).

During the Second World War it was badly damaged and expanded during GDR times and also used for other events.

In 1998 the building was closed.

The federal and state governments are funding half of the renovation with a total of 23 million euros.
