There is still no evidence of a withdrawal of Eritrean troops from Tigray, the US State Department said on Wednesday, confirming UN information.

At the end of March, the Ethiopian Prime Minister had for the first time recognized the presence of Asmara's soldiers in Tigray.

He had announced their withdrawal, but several sources confirm that they are still present.

For the Americans, the Eritrean troops are always there.

Washington has again called for their complete withdrawal.

A departure from Tigray "

essential to restore peace and humanitarian access,

" said Ned Price, the spokesperson for the State Department.

This statement confirms that of last week made to the UN Security Council by Mark Lowcock.

The UN official for Humanitarian Affairs had estimated that there was no proof of the departure of the Eritreans.

According to him, the soldiers sent by Asmara would now wear Ethiopian army uniforms.

Meanwhile, Eritrean soldiers are said to continue to commit massacres.

The latter was reported by Amnesty International.

On April 12, they reportedly fired at crowds in Adwa, southern Tigray, without reason, killing around ten people.

Six days ago,

Asmara had for the first time recognized the presence of his soldiers in the province

, recalling that the Eritreans had agreed to withdraw and let the Ethiopian army redeploy along the border.

Eritrea, however, had accused the UN of producing "

spurious reports

", even summoning its representatives in the country to officially protest.

The situation on the ground is catastrophic and is said to be even worsening.

Almost 4.5 million people are in need of humanitarian aid out of a population of 6 million.
